Between Intention and Accident

2025, Mixed Media on Canvas
38" x 54"

Between Intention and Accident explores the tension between control and surrender. Joseph Sciallo divides the canvas into bold architectural zones of red, yellow, and black, creating a sense of deliberate structure, order, and decision.

Below that controlled surface, four smaller windows reveal explosive abstract passages, colorful, unpredictable, alive. These sections feel like private worlds where paint is allowed to move freely, resisting the discipline imposed above.

The painting becomes a meditation on the creative process itself: the artist’s plan meeting the unpredictable behavior of material, instinct, memory, and chance. It suggests that meaning is often born in the space between what we try to control and what happens despite us.
